Faculty Fellowships

The Council for Race and Ethnic Studies (CRES) calls for proposals for faculty fellowship awards to be awarded for the 2023-2024 academic year. As a collaboration between the Asian American Studies (AASP) and Latina and Latino Studies Programs (LLSP) to advance the interdisciplinary study of race and Ethnic Studies Scholarship at Northwestern, CRES supports undergraduate, graduate, and faculty fellows. We invite applications from continuing faculty in any discipline, including tenure track and teaching track faculty with continuing appointments.

CRES seeks to support faculty whose research and teaching engage the study of race and advance Ethnic Studies. Fellows are required to propose a new course in this area that would be taught by the Fellow through the relevant Program (AASP or LLSP) or cross-listed in both Programs, to be offered by Spring 2025. Fellows participate in the CRES community by attending CRES-sponsored talks and workshops, talks by invited speakers, workshops that give feedback on work-in-progress by CRES faculty, and by presenting their work to the CRES community during their fellowship.

CRES fellowships are considered external fellowships and can be used for either a 50% teaching reduction or a full year of supported leave if this fellowship coincides with the regular faculty or teaching track one-quarter leave. Teaching reductions do not count against a faculty member’s ongoing “leave clock.” Applicants must be eligible for a leave and must secure the approval from their department chair before applying, including approval to teach the proposed course in the year following the fellowship. Department chair approval is needed for both options, the teaching reduction or the leave extension. Applicants from Bienen, Medill, and the School of Communication must also secure approval from their Dean of Faculty Affairs for their leave or teaching reductions in addition to their Department Chair.

Application deadline

Applications are due by February 1, 2023. Faculty fellows will be notified of their award by March, 2023.

APPLICATION PROCESS

Please submit the following documents as PDF file's on our online portal

  • A description of your proposed course, including thematic areas and a preliminary list of readings, as well as a statement about how your course advances Ethnic Studies through the study of race. This course should not replicate the existing curricula in LLSP or AASP but would expand our offerings and be housed within either or both Programs.
  • A 3-page, double-spaced description (maximum) of the work-in-progress you would share by the Spring of your fellowship year, focusing on the research you propose to complete during your fellowship. Please indicate whether you are requesting a 50% course reduction or a full year of supported leave; describe your project and your goals while on fellowship; describe your methodology and indicate how it aligns with the study of race and Ethnic Studies (cres.northwestern.edu); and situate your research or teaching within your field or discipline.
  • 1-page project bibliography. In the application portal, upload the bibliography under the "publication list" documents section.
  • C.V.
  • Two letters of reference (one may be from a Northwestern faculty member)
  • Approval from your department chair and/or dean (email correspondence will suffice) that allows you to both take the teaching reduction (or the leave extension) and teach your proposed course by Spring quarter of the year following your fellowship year. (That is, if you earn a fellowship in the 2023-2024 year, you would need to teach your proposed course by Spring 2025).
